During
the month of August we are in a period of thanksgiving for our
mission trip into India.
For several weeks, the monsoon rains were too hard that our
activities were threatened. We were putting contingency plans into
action.
We
knew we could not have a five-day Vacation Bible School in four
days. So, adjustments to the program were made to do just that.
Then the problem of the rains suggested that we have one day's
classes in the
morning,
provide lunch for the teachers and children, and then the second
day'sclass in
the afternoon. Certainly, not an ideal situation, but the watchword
was "flexibility." This is what happened. It was hard for the
children and the teachers, but we survived.
When
time to begin the first day of Vacation Bible School we had just a
hand-full of
children. The people there said to wait, others would come. One
group came, then
another, then another.
Soon the little church's auditorium was full. The children
were enthusiastic, and
very smart. They learned the music, Bible verses, and got a good
amount of Bible learning in a short time. The teachers from our
church were prepared and ready to teach. We had excellent
interpreters.
God
intervened. The monsoon rains did not come during the days we were
in India.
The
Vacation Bible School was only one third of our work.
We had, what some
call, a medical
camp. Our two
nurses joined the work of a local doctor, to minister to many local
people that cannot
afford
medical treatment. The
doctor is himself a missionary from Nagaland.
He has
sacrificed a lucrative practice in India to work for practically
nothing so that he can minister to the less fortunate people of the
area. The three workers cooperated in the medical treatments, but
also prayed for those that came and witnessed to the reality of a
loving Christ.
Our
third focus was on leadership training. Many of the church leaders
are untrained. Many have little formal education. Therefore, our
other team led
conferences on "servant leadership," "church
administration," and
"finances in the church." Those that came were enthusiastic
learners. They asked intelligent and appropriate questions. We were
impressed with the level of commitment and zeal the leaders have for
the Lord.
We
praise God for His goodness and grace that gave us many
opportunities to minister in His name during this mission trip.
